Baseball Hitters With a .400 Average

  Year   Player  Team   League  Average
1876   Ross Barnes   Chicago White Stockings   NL   0.429

You are no doubt quite familiar that "NL" means "National League" and "AL" means "American League".
The "UA" stands for the Union Association Baseball League which lasted just one year 1884.
"AA" stands for the American Association Baseball League (1882-1891) and it does not mean "Double A Baseball".

Batting "400" for an entire baseball season is an incredibly rare and difficult accomplishment.
In the entire history of baseball it has only been done 28 times by 20 different people.
It is surprising to think that five players have done this more than once.

  1911     1912     1922     Ty Cobb
